NOAH

“It’s been way too long since we did this, man,” Aaron said.

I nodded. “It feels good to let loose. Split.” I glanced at the dealer who split the two nines he’d just dealt me so that I could play them separately.

“Is your dad getting off your case about your drinking and gambling now that you’re married?” Gunner asked from my other side.

I snorted. “No. He still sees me as this kid who needs to be guided and schooled, not a grown man. I can do whatever I want with my money, I keep telling him that. But I think deep down, he still sees it as his money.”

“Well, the money in the trust fund is.”

“Sure,” I said, watching the cards the dealer laid out—a two and a ten—and waved my hand over the ten, and let him deal me another card on the two. His own cards were a seven and a six, and if I held outright, I would get closer to twenty-one than he was and win this round. “But the money I work for has nothing to do with him.”

“You’re right,” Gunner said, and he studied the pair of cards before him, trying to decide if he was going to take the chance. He wasn’t a pro at Blackjack, and lost more often than he won. But he liked playing, anyway.

Most of the time, gambling was about pissing away money. Now and then, though, we hit it big, and then the win was so big that it covered all the losses. I’d done the math on it. The stats were sound. I saw gambling as a business investment.

My dad didn’t see it that way. And the rest of the world didn’t seem to see it that way, either.

“How’s Maddison doing?” I asked Gunner, changing the topic away from my dad and my money. “You’re still with her?”

“Yeah, of course,” Gunner said. “Looks like it's getting serious.”

“Really?” I asked. “I thought you said it was just a fling.”

He shrugged. “I told myself I’d keep doing it until the first real flaw popped up, and I couldn’t see a reason we should move forward. But that hasn’t happened yet, and we’re going on a year now. And if it works, it works, right?”

“Has it really been that long?” Aaron asked from my other side. He wasn’t playing with us. He always said his life was complicated enough without leaving matters to chance. To each their own.

I won the round and scraped the chips toward me, grinning. I put down another stack, and the dealer dealt a fresh hand. A three and an eight landed in front of me. I nodded at the dealer after he had a six and a queen.

Gunner whistled through his teeth. “I wouldn’t push that one. He’s on eighteen. You can’t get closer than that.”

“Always worth the risk,” I said and let him deal me another. I got a king, which meant I had lost no matter which way the dealer’s cards went.

I scowled and pushed the stack of money toward him.
